Synopsis
Artist talk: Albena Baeva & Stanimir Panayotov
The digital footprint of hate and misogyny are not an illusion, detached from the “real” world. The digital is as real as the reality itself, and Albena Baeva’s work is proof that online cultures and communication have a real/material consequence in our daily lives. Working at the edges of feminism, data and cloud analysis, gamification, and social theory, Albena Baeva’s exhibition makes a bold and salient feminist statement out of online trolls and the incel dungeons of Bulgarian society: comments, words and data become the work of art, which in turns re-works and re-mixes the anonymous affect of hatred and deprecation into a glorious girl-power manifesto. Baeva's true model of gamified subversion is socially captivating and aesthetically mesmerizing.
