Synopsis

Lecture | Artistic institutions and the equality of gatherings, Bojana Kunst

The lecture will be focused on the
attacks on the artistic institutions, plays,
performance festivals, and other artistic
events, which are all related to the rise of
populism and nationalism in Europe. They
are also related to the series of austerity
measures and budget cuts on the nongovernmental
sector of culture, which are
often used as series of re-evaluations and
adjustments to the more hierarchical and
populist understanding of art, throwing
many artists into invisibility and poverty
and marginalizing their already precarious
situation. The goal is to completely reduce
the infrastructural support which is not only
needed for the existence of the practices, but
also for the continuity of the autonomous
political and aesthetic expression.
Bojana Kunst is a philosopher, dramaturg
and performance theoretician. She is the
director of the Institute for Applied Theater
Studies in Justus Liebig University Giessen,
where she is also working as a professor.
She is a member of the board of editors of
the magazines: “Maska”, “Amfiteater” and
“Performance Research”. Her last book
was “Artist at Work, Proximity of Art and
Capitalism” that was published by Zero
Books, Winchester, London, 2015.
The lecture is part of the program
“Art, Political Institution, Body” initiated
by LOKOMOTIVA. The aim of the program
is to open new possibilities for young
professionals for critical reflection and
comparative analysis of contemporary arts
and perception of art practices and cultural
activities through the prism of the
contemporary context.

Lokomotiva - Centre for New Initiatives
in Arts and Culture is a civic organization
and an active participant in the building
and development of the democratic sociocultural
space in Macedonia and in the
region. Through its activities, Lokomotiva
aims to provide better access of citizens to
artistic and cultural events and projects and
to influence the development and support of
contemporary art and culture as an impetus
for the development of a democratic society.
As a co-founder and partner of the project_
space Kino Kultura (together with the
Theater of the Navigator Cvetko), Lokomotiva
intervenes directly into the public sphere,
creating a space that is needed for the action
of civil society organizations in the field of
culture and the wider civil sector.
